Packing up your life and moving to a new home can be a daunting prospect. This is especially the case when there are so many other things to think about at this time.
Fortunately, we’re experts in this field so follow our tips below and you’ll be relaxing in your new home before you know it.
Start packing in good time
One of the best pieces of advice we can offer is to get organised as soon as possible. If you leave everything to the last minute, it’s going to make an already stressful situation unnecessarily painful.
If you start packing in good time, you can break the task down into smaller, more manageable chunks. It’s a good idea to start with all the non-essentials or pack away one room at a time. Doing a little bit each day makes the job seem far less overwhelming.
Declutter as you go
Moving home is the perfect time to declutter. Throw away or donate anything you no longer use. As well as ensuring your new place is clutter-free, it will also make unpacking when you’re on the other side much quicker and easier.
We really can’t emphasise this point enough! Your boxes will end up all over the place and there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to find something you need amongst hundreds of boxes.
Labelling everything also means that the right boxes can be put in the right room as soon as you arrive.
Use the right sized boxes
People often think it makes sense to use the biggest boxes they can find because you can fit more in them. It isn’t until moving day arrives that they realise they’ve actually made life more difficult for themselves.
Try to avoid using boxes that are too big. Not only are they difficult to carry, it’s tempting to pack them full which makes them very heavy as well.
Secure your boxes
Most people will naturally tape the top of their boxes shut. It’s also worth adding a couple extra layers of tape to the bottom and edges of your boxes because these areas are placed under greater stress so could tear.
Use bubble wrap for fragile items
As well as using bubble wrap for delicate items such as glass, make sure you label these boxes as fragile so whoever’s handling them knows to take extra care.
Set aside a box for moving day
A great tip is to have a moving day essentials box. Pack things like tea, coffee, food, the kettle, a few bits of crockery, toiletries and a change of clothes. This means that if you’re too tired to unpack anything on the day you arrive, you still have everything you need to hand.
