A survey published by the Building Societies Association (BSA) has revealed the top reasons Brits move home.
While we commonly associate the desire to relocate with finally being able to afford our dream home, the most popular answer may surprise you. According to the survey, the main reason for moving is to lower mortgage payments. The desire to save money has grown in prominence since the last Property Tracker survey, rising from 37% in December 2020 to 51% in the latest report.
A change in income or a need to save money means that many choose to move to an area where the cost of running a home is much lower. From the price of the house itself to the cost of bills and going out in the local area, location plays a huge role in the cost of everyday living expenses.
The survey also found that getting more private outdoor space is a priority for 73% of us, while 62% want to move away from built-up areas in order to embrace nature. The BSA has said that this is a substantial increase compared to prior surveys.
What are some of the other popular reasons for moving home?
Undoubtedly one of the biggest contributors to moving is the desire for more space. This is most often down to expanding families but with more people working from home than ever before, the need for additional living space is on the rise.
Securing a new job can often drive people to move if the commute is too long or simply isn’t practical. For some, their job may even require them to move to a different country.
Moving to a catchment area for a particular school is a high priority for many parents so this is another common reason we see for people deciding to relocate.
Once the kids have grown up and left home, many choose to downsize to a smaller home as they no longer have a need for the extra space. The appeal of having a property which is easier to maintain as you get older often prompts people to downgrade as well.
Change in circumstances
Big life events are a very common trigger for moving home. Deciding to move in with a partner, ending a relationship, having children or needing to be closer to family are some of the most common reasons for moving.
For some people however, a simple change of scenery is needed. You might want to go from a busy city to the peaceful countryside or vice versa.
